How to Use a Prostate Massager: A Calm First-Time Guide

How to Use a Prostate Massager: A Calm First-Time Guide – LustSutra

Prostate play is one of the least discussed topics among Indian men, and one of the most searched in private. Curiosity is common, and so is nervousness: about pain, hygiene, and what it says about you. For the record, it says nothing about your sexuality. Men of every orientation enjoy it, and plenty of married couples explore it together.

This guide is for adults over 21 trying a prostate massager for the first time. It covers what to check before you begin, how to prepare, a step-by-step first session, what it may feel like, and how to clean up. If you want to know what these toys are and how the shapes differ, start with our guide to prostate massagers; this page is about using one.

Before you start: three honest checks

  • Your health. Skip prostate play and see a doctor first if you have piles, an anal fissure, bleeding from the bottom, a bowel condition, or have had recent surgery in the area. The same applies if you have urinary symptoms, pain or a prostate condition: a doctor should look at those, and a toy is not a treatment.
  • Your toy. Use only a toy made for anal use, with a flared base or a curved handle that cannot slip inside. Never improvise with household objects. Our glossary entry on the flared base explains why this matters.
  • Your time. Choose a moment when you will not be disturbed for at least 30 minutes. Rushing is the main cause of discomfort. In a shared home, late night or a weekend afternoon alone is usually easiest.

Where the prostate is

The prostate is a small gland that sits below the bladder. From inside the rectum, it can be felt on the front wall, the side towards the belly button, a few centimetres in. That is why prostate massagers curve forwards: the curve presses the tip against that front wall while the base or handle stays outside.

You do not need to find it on the first try. Many men spend their first few sessions simply getting used to the feeling of a toy inside, and that is a perfectly good start.

What you need

  • A beginner-friendly prostate massager, smooth and slim at the tip.
  • Plenty of thick water-based lube. The anus makes no lubrication of its own. Avoid silicone lube on silicone toys; our lube guide explains why.
  • A towel, tissues and mild soap or a toy cleaner.
  • Short nails, and an empty bowel. A shower and a trip to the toilet are usually enough; douching is optional.

Step by step: your first session

  1. Relax first. Take a warm shower, lie down and breathe slowly for a few minutes. Tension makes the muscles tighten.
  2. Warm up with touch. With a lubed finger, gently massage the outside of the anus. If you want to, slowly insert one fingertip to learn how the area feels.
  3. Lube the toy and yourself. Use more than seems necessary on both.
  4. Pick a position. Lying on your side with your top knee pulled up is the easiest. Lying on your back with knees bent also works and gives you a good angle.
  5. Insert slowly. Press the tip against the opening, breathe out and let it slide in a little at a time. Pause whenever you feel resistance; push through nothing.
  6. Find the angle. Once the toy is in, let the curve point towards your belly. Gently rock the handle or tighten and relax your pelvic floor muscles, as if stopping a wee. That small movement does much of the work.
  7. Stay with it, or stop. Sensations can take a while to build. Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty for a first time.
  8. Remove gently. Breathe out and pull it out slowly, at the same angle it went in.

A manual toy is the gentlest way to learn. You can always add vibration later.

What it may feel like

Early on, many men simply feel fullness or the urge to go to the toilet. That is normal and usually fades as you relax. With time, gentle pressure on the prostate can feel warm, deep and different from penile pleasure. Some men enjoy it greatly, some feel little, and both are fine. There is no proven health benefit from prostate massage with a toy, so treat it as pleasure, not medicine.

Stop straight away if you feel sharp pain, burning or see more than a trace of blood, and speak to a doctor if pain or bleeding continues afterwards.

Aftercare and cleaning

Wash the toy in warm water with mild soap or a toy cleaner, rinse it well and let it dry fully before you put it away; our guide on how to clean sex toys covers each material. Keep anal toys separate from toys used elsewhere. Have a wash yourself, drink some water and give your body a day before trying again. If you enjoyed it and want to explore further, our anal training guide shows how to build up slowly.

Common first-time mistakes

  • Too little lube, or lube that dries fast.
  • Starting with a large or heavily vibrating toy.
  • Pushing through discomfort instead of pausing.
  • Expecting fireworks the first time and giving up after one try.

Frequently asked questions

Does using a prostate massager mean I am gay?

No. Prostate play is a physical sensation, and men of every orientation enjoy it. What you enjoy in private says nothing about who you are attracted to.

Will it hurt?

It should not. Discomfort usually means too little lube, too fast a pace or too big a toy. Slow down, add lube, or stop and try another day.

Do I need to douche first?

Not usually. A shower and an empty bowel are enough for most people. If you do douche, use plain lukewarm water and keep it gentle.

Is prostate massage good for prostate health?

There is no good evidence that using a toy improves prostate health. If you have urinary problems or pain, see a doctor rather than treating it yourself.
