Handcuffs are often the first bit of kink a couple tries, and for good reason. They are simple, a little cheeky, and they change the feel of a familiar evening without anything complicated. The question most beginners ask is not whether to try them, but which kind, and how to do it without anyone getting hurt or feeling uneasy.
This guide compares the soft handcuffs you can buy in India, from fluffy fur cuffs to Velcro, padded and buckle styles, with the real prices of the ones we stock. Then it covers the part that matters most: fit, safety and what to keep within arm’s reach.
Why “soft” matters
Police-style metal cuffs are built to hold someone who is trying to escape. In bed, nobody should be trying to escape, so that design works against you. Hard metal edges press on the wrist bones and on nerves that run close to the surface on the inside of the wrist. Struggling, even playfully, can leave bruises or a tingling hand that lasts for days.
Soft cuffs spread the pressure over a wider band, and most of them open quickly. That makes them the sensible start for anyone new to restraint. Our beginner bondage safety guide covers restraint more broadly; this page is just about cuffs.
The main types compared
| Type | How it closes | How it feels | Release speed | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fur-covered metal | Ratchet with keys | Soft on top, firm underneath | Slow: needs the key | Losing the key; ratchets can tighten if pulled |
| Velcro fabric | Hook-and-loop strap | Light and soft | Very fast: one pull | Velcro can open on its own if you pull hard |
| Padded | Adjustable strap | Cushioned, wider band | Fast | Check the fit at the start |
| PU or vegan leather with buckles | Buckle, often with a removable chain | Firm but smooth | Medium: unbuckle by hand | Small locks on some sets; skip them at first |
For a first try, Velcro or padded cuffs are the most forgiving. Buckle cuffs are a good second step when you know you enjoy it.

How tight is too tight
Use the two-finger rule: once the cuff is closed, you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the cuff and the wrist. Any tighter and you risk pressing on nerves and blood vessels. Any looser and a wrist can twist out and get scraped.
Then keep checking. Every few minutes, ask your partner to wiggle their fingers and tell you how their hands feel. Stop and release the cuffs straight away if you notice any of these:
- tingling, pins and needles or numbness in the hands or fingers
- hands that feel cold or look pale, blue or very red
- sharp pain at the wrist, or pain in the shoulders from holding the arms up
Most tingling passes within minutes once the cuffs are off. If numbness or weakness in the hand lasts more than a day, see a doctor.
Six safety rules before you start
- Talk on a normal day first. Agree what you both want to try and what is off the table.
- Pick a safe word and a hand signal. Use a word you would never say by accident, plus a signal, such as dropping a held object, in case talking is hard.
- Keep the release within reach. Keys on the bedside table, not in a drawer. Keep a pair of blunt-tipped safety scissors (₹799) nearby for any strap that jams.
- Never leave a cuffed partner alone, not even to fetch water.
- No alcohol or anything else that dulls the senses. You both need to notice pain and react quickly.
- Wrists only, and never around the neck. Do not tie anyone’s arms high above their head for long, and do not let cuffs take body weight.
A gentle first session
Start with the cuffs on in front of the body rather than behind the back, which is easier on the shoulders. Keep it to ten or fifteen minutes. Spend that time on slow kissing, a massage or teasing touch rather than anything strenuous. When the cuffs come off, rub your partner’s wrists, check how they feel and talk about what you both liked. That short check-in is called aftercare; our guide to aftercare after sex explains why it matters.
Many couples find a blindfold pairs well with cuffs, because it heightens touch without adding any strain. Add one thing at a time, not both on the first night.
Cleaning and storing cuffs
Fabric and fur cuffs can usually be hand-washed in cool water with mild soap and dried flat in the shade; check the label first. PU and vegan leather wipe clean with a damp cloth. Metal parts should be dried fully so they do not rust. Store cuffs in a cloth pouch, with any keys taped inside the pouch, so they are not lost and do not clink in a cupboard. In a shared home, a plain box at the back of a wardrobe is safer than a bedside drawer.

Frequently asked questions
Are fur handcuffs safe for beginners?
Fur cuffs are comfortable, but many have a metal ratchet and a key underneath. They are safe if you close them loosely, use the two-finger rule and keep the key in sight. Velcro or padded cuffs are easier to release quickly.
How do I know if handcuffs are too tight?
You should be able to slide two fingers between the cuff and the wrist. Tingling, numbness, cold or discoloured hands mean they are too tight: release them straight away.
What if we lose the key?
Choose cuffs without locks at first, or keep the key taped to the cuffs’ pouch on the bedside table. Keep blunt-tipped safety scissors nearby for straps.
Can I wear handcuffs behind my back?
You can, but it puts more strain on the shoulders. Start with the hands in front and keep sessions short until you know how your body feels.
