Many people in India hesitate to buy a toy because of what they have heard: that toys cause infections, numbness, or addiction, or that they are “bad for you”. Most of these worries come from myths, and the real risks are easy to avoid. Here are the facts.
This article is general information, not medical advice. If you have pain, bleeding, unusual discharge or a health condition, please see a doctor.
The short answer
Yes, sex toys are safe for most adults when they are made from body-safe materials, kept clean and used with care. The main risks come from cheap, unsafe materials, poor hygiene and using a toy in a way it was not designed for.
1. Materials: the biggest safety factor
Some cheap toys are made from porous materials that trap bacteria, or from soft plastics that may contain chemical softeners. Safer choices are non-porous:
- Medical-grade or platinum-cured silicone: the gold standard.
- ABS plastic: hard, smooth, common in vibrators.
- Borosilicate glass and stainless steel: non-porous and very easy to sterilise.
TPE and TPR are softer and cheaper. They are fine for personal use if cleaned carefully, but they are slightly porous, so do not share them. Read more in our body-safe materials guide.
2. Hygiene and infections
A toy can carry bacteria from one use to the next if it is not cleaned. That is how most toy-related irritation and infections happen. Simple habits prevent it:
- Wash before and after every use with warm water and mild, unscented soap or a toy cleaner.
- Dry completely before storing.
- Never move a toy from anal to vaginal use without washing it first (or use a fresh condom over it).
- If you share a toy, use a condom over it or clean it between partners.
Our cleaning guide explains how to clean every material.
3. Lubricant matters
Friction causes tiny tears and soreness. A good lubricant prevents that. Use water-based lube with silicone toys and condoms, and avoid oil-based lubricants with latex condoms. See our lubricant guide.
4. “Will a vibrator make me numb?”
This is one of the most common myths. Some people notice temporary reduced sensitivity after long use on a high setting, which returns to normal quickly, often within an hour. There is no good evidence that vibrators cause lasting damage. If you notice it, simply lower the intensity or take a break.
5. “Are sex toys addictive?”
Toys are not physically addictive. Some people come to prefer a toy because it works reliably, which is normal. If you feel it is affecting your relationship or partnered sex, try varying how you get aroused, and talk to a counsellor if it worries you.
6. Anal safety
Only use toys designed for anal use, with a flared base so they cannot slip inside. Use plenty of lubricant and go slowly. Never use a toy without a base anally.
7. Batteries and charging
- Use the charger or cable that came with the toy.
- Do not charge a toy that is wet or damaged.
- Stop using a toy that gets hot, swells or smells of burning.
8. Fake products
Cheap copies of well-known brands are a real risk: unknown materials, weak batteries and poor seals. Buy named brands from a store that lists materials and has a returns policy. Our buying guide shows how to spot fakes.

When to see a doctor
- Pain, bleeding or burning that does not settle.
- Unusual discharge, itching or a rash.
- A toy you cannot remove.
- Any symptom you are unsure about.
If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or childbirth, or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before using toys.
The health benefits
Used safely, toys can be good for you: orgasms release endorphins that ease stress and help sleep, pelvic floor toys like kegel balls strengthen muscles, and exploring your body helps you communicate with a partner. See our kegel balls guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can sex toys cause infections?
Toys themselves do not cause infections, but dirty toys can carry bacteria. Cleaning before and after use, drying properly and not sharing porous toys prevents most problems.
Are vibrators bad for you?
No. Vibrators are safe for most adults. Any reduced sensitivity after long, intense use is temporary and goes away quickly.
Which sex toy material is safest?
Medical-grade silicone, glass and stainless steel are the safest because they are non-porous and easy to clean.
Can I use a sex toy during my period?
Yes, external toys are fine. For internal toys, clean them thoroughly afterwards. Some women find vibrators ease period cramps.
