To charge a vibrator, dry it completely, connect the cable that came with it to a phone charger or a laptop USB port, and leave it until the light stops blinking or turns steady, usually one to two hours. Never charge a toy that is wet. Give a new toy a full first charge before you use it.
This guide covers the three common ways toys charge, the first charge, the travel lock, what to do when a toy will not charge or switch on, and how to keep the battery healthy for years.
How to charge a vibrator, step by step
- Dry it. Wipe the toy and the charging point with a dry cloth and let it air-dry if you have just washed it.
- Find the charging point. A USB port, two small metal pins (magnetic) or a tiny round socket.
- Use the cable it came with. Magnetic cables are made for one toy shape, and similar-looking leads may not fit.
- Plug into a standard USB power source: a phone charger or a laptop port. If the manual names a power limit, stick to it.
- Watch the light. Most toys blink while charging and glow steady or switch off when full.
- Unplug when it is done. Do not leave it on the charger for days.
The three ways toys charge
| Type | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| USB port | A USB-C or micro-USB socket, often behind a cover | Close the cover before water play |
| Magnetic pins | A cable that clicks onto two metal contacts | Pins must be clean and dry; the cable fits only that toy |
| DC socket | A thin round plug, common on older or larger toys | Push the plug fully in |
| Battery cells | No charging: AAA, AA or button cells | Take cells out for storage and travel |
The first charge
New toys usually arrive part-charged for safety in transit. Charge it fully before the first use: it confirms the toy and cable work while you can still report a fault, and you start with a known full battery.
Travel lock
Many rechargeable toys have a lock that stops them switching on in a bag. It is usually set by holding one or two buttons for a few seconds, and some toys unlock only when plugged in. If a new toy seems dead, a travel lock is the first thing to check. The exact button combination is in the manual.
It won’t charge or switch on: checklist
- Is the travel lock on? Try the unlock combination, or plug it in for a few seconds.
- Are the magnetic pins clean? Wipe them with a dry cotton bud; lube and dust stop the contact.
- Is the cable seated? Magnetic heads have a right way round; turn it over.
- Try another USB adapter or port. Some laptop ports switch off when the laptop sleeps.
- Leave it charging for 30 minutes before testing. A fully drained battery can take a while to show a light.
- Still nothing? Stop and do not open it.

Safety first
Never charge a toy that is wet, even if it is waterproof. If a toy gets hot while charging, swells, leaks or smells of burning, unplug it at once and stop using it.
Keeping the battery healthy
- Charge before it is completely flat when you can.
- If you will not use it for a while, store it part-charged and top it up every two to three months.
- Keep it out of heat: not on a sunny windowsill or in a parked car.
- Clean it before charging, as our cleaning guide explains, so lube does not reach the contacts.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a vibrator take to charge?
Most take one to two hours. The manual or product page gives the time where the maker states it.
Can I charge my vibrator with a phone charger?
Usually, yes. A standard USB phone charger works for most toys. If the manual names a power limit, follow it.
Why is my new vibrator not turning on?
Check the travel lock first, then charge it fully. Many toys ship part-charged and locked.
Can I leave my toy charging overnight?
It is better not to. Unplug it once the light shows it is full.
My magnetic charger will not stay on. What do I do?
Clean and dry both the pins and the cable head, then try it the other way round.
