Types of Dildos: Materials, Sizes & Prices

Updated

A dildo is a non-vibrating toy made for penetration, usually a smooth or curved shaft with a base you can hold or stand up. Because there is no motor, a dildo is silent, has nothing to charge and lasts for years if you choose a good material. This guide answers the two questions we are asked most: what dildos are made of, and how to choose a size. Ours start at ₹499.

What are dildos made of?

The material decides how a dildo feels, how you clean it and which lube you can use, so it matters more than the shape.

  • Silicone: soft on the surface with a firm core, warms to body temperature and is non-porous, so it washes clean. Most of the dildos we stock are silicone. Use water-based lube with it; silicone lube can damage some silicone toys. See medical-grade silicone.
  • Glass: hard, very smooth and completely non-porous. Good toy glass is borosilicate, the heat-resistant kind, so it can be warmed in water or cooled in the fridge. Any lube works with glass.
  • TPR or TPE (“jelly”): cheaper and softer, but slightly porous, so it can hold on to bacteria. Our fruit-shaped novelty dildo (the cucumber one people search for) is TPR; use it with a condom and wash it well. See TPE.
  • Not stocked: unbranded jelly toys with a strong chemical smell. Body-safe materials explained covers why.

How it feels and how it works

A dildo gives fullness and pressure rather than buzz. You control the pace and angle with your hand, or go hands-free with a suction-cup base on a smooth tiled wall or floor. A curved tip presses on the front wall of the vagina (the G-spot area); a straight shaft gives more general sensation.

Some dildos add movement without a motor: one of ours has a flexible, bouncing shaft, and another bends so you can try different angles with one toy. Glass toys feel firmer and glide more easily than silicone, and many people like their weight.

How to choose a size

  • Width matters more than length. Most people notice the width first. The silicone dildos we stock are about 3.3 to 3.8 cm across and 17 to 18 cm long, which is a moderate size.
  • Start smaller than you think. Compare with something you already know is comfortable, and check the insertable length on the product page, not the total length.
  • Anal use needs a flared base. Anything used anally must have a wide base or stop so it cannot slip inside. If a dildo has no flared base, keep it for vaginal use.
  • Harness or hands-free: a thin, flat base works on a smooth surface and suits strap-on use; a round handle is easier to hold.

Who it suits and who should skip it

  • Suits: anyone who enjoys penetration and wants a simple, quiet toy that lasts; couples who want to add a toy without batteries.
  • Suits: people who already know a vibrator is not what they want inside.
  • Skip it for now if: you mainly want clitoral stimulation (see types of vibrators), or penetration is painful, in which case speak to a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

What are dildos made of?

Body-safe dildos are made of silicone, borosilicate glass or stainless steel, which are non-porous. Cheaper ones use TPR or TPE, which are softer but slightly porous, so use them with a condom.

What size dildo should a beginner choose?

A moderate size: around 3 cm wide and 15 to 18 cm long. Width matters more than length, and you can always size up later.

Can a dildo be used for anal play?

Only if it has a flared base or a wide stop so it cannot slip inside. Use plenty of lube, go slowly, and wash it before any switch to vaginal use.

Is a glass dildo safe?

Yes, if it is borosilicate glass with no chips or cracks. It is non-porous, very easy to clean and works with any lube.

Which lube should I use with a dildo?

Water-based lube with silicone and TPR dildos. Glass works with water-based or silicone lube.
