Short answer: coconut oil is not a good all-round lube. It weakens latex condoms, which can make them tear, it can damage some toy materials, and it is hard to wash off. Some people use it for an external massage without trouble, but for sex with condoms or toys, a water-based or silicone lube is the better choice.
Almost every Indian kitchen has a bottle of coconut oil, so it is no surprise people reach for it. Here is why it is popular, where it goes wrong, and what to use instead. It is part of our myths and facts series.
Where the myth comes from
Coconut oil is trusted in India for hair, skin and cooking, and it feels natural and familiar. It is cheap, always at hand and nobody has to buy anything embarrassing. Wellness posts online add to its reputation. “Natural” sounds safe, but it does not tell you how an oil behaves with latex or toys.
What is actually true
The NHS advises not to use oil-based lubricant with latex condoms and to use water-based or silicone-based lubricant instead (NHS on condoms). The ISSM explains why: oils weaken latex, making a condom more likely to leak or break, and it adds that petroleum-based products such as baby oil cause irritation for some women (ISSM on lubricants).
Oil also clings. It does not rinse away with water, and soft, porous toys made of TPE or jelly can turn sticky or break down with it. Our massage oil vs lubricant page compares the two side by side.

What to do instead
- With toys or condoms: a water-based lubricant, which suits every toy material and condom.
- For long sessions: a silicone lube stays slippery for much more time and is condom-safe.
- For a massage: keep the coconut oil, and wipe it off before moving on.
- Patch-test any new lube on your inner wrist and wait a day.
- Read the label with our list of lube ingredients to avoid.

Frequently asked questions
Is coconut oil safe with condoms?
Not with latex condoms; oil weakens latex. Polyurethane condoms are not affected by oil, so check the packet.
Can I use coconut oil with silicone toys?
It does not harm silicone, but it is hard to wash off completely. With soft TPE or jelly toys, avoid it altogether.
Is virgin coconut oil any different?
No. It is still an oil, so the same condom and toy rules apply.
What should I buy instead?
A plain water-based lube is the safest all-rounder. Choose a glycerin-free one if your skin is sensitive.
