Silicone lubricant: Meaning and What to Buy

Silicone lubricant is a lube made from silicone oils. It lasts much longer than water-based lube, does not dry out or turn sticky and keeps working in water, so it is popular for long sessions, massage and the shower. It is condom-safe, but it can damage silicone toys, so pair it with glass, steel or ABS.

Why it matters when buying

Silicone lube is a second lube for most people, not the first. It is harder to wash off skin and sheets, and it is not for silicone toys. A small bottle goes a long way.

What to look for

  • “Condom-safe” on the label
  • Glass, steel or hard plastic toys
  • A patch test before using it near a silicone toy
  • Soap and water to wash it off afterwards
