Butt Plug Size Guide: Start Small, Stay Safe

Updated

With butt plugs, size is mostly about one number: the widest point. Start smaller than you think you need, go slowly, and you will enjoy it far more. This guide explains how plug sizes work, lists the stated sizes of the plugs we stock, and covers the safety rules that matter most. If you are completely new, read our guide to butt plugs for beginners first.

Safety first

  • Always a flared base. Anything that goes in the anus needs a wide flared base so it cannot slip inside. Every plug we stock has one.
  • Start small. A small plug with a tapered tip is the right first plug for almost everyone.
  • Use plenty of lube. The anus does not make its own. A thick water-based lube works with every material; see the lube compatibility chart.
  • Never use numbing creams or sprays. Pain is the signal to slow down or stop; numbing hides it.
  • Stop if it hurts. Discomfort that eases with breathing and patience is normal at first; sharp pain is not. If you notice bleeding that does not stop, see a doctor.

Sizes explained

SizeWidest pointWho it suits
Smallunder 32 mmFirst plug; short wear; anyone unsure
Medium32 to 38 mmAfter a few comfortable sessions with a small plug
Largeover 38 mmExperienced users only, after medium feels easy

Length matters less than width, but a longer plug sits deeper, so beginners do best with something under about 10 cm. The neck (the narrow part above the base) is what you feel once a plug is in place: a slim neck is more comfortable to wear for longer. Moving up a size gradually over weeks is sometimes called anal training. There is no rush, and many people stay with a small plug.

Sizes of the plugs we stock

Length and widest point as stated by each maker, at the time of writing. Where a maker gives only overall dimensions, we count the stated width as the widest point. Plugs whose maker states no size are not listed.

How to use a plug safely

  • Wash the plug and your hands, and use the toilet first.
  • Lube the plug and yourself generously, then relax and breathe out as you press gently. Let your body set the pace.
  • Start with 5 to 15 minutes. Build up slowly, and do not wear a plug for hours.
  • Remove it slowly, holding the base, then wash it with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner.
  • Do not move a plug from anal to vaginal use without washing it first.

When to stop

  • Sharp or growing pain.
  • Bleeding.
  • Numbness or a burning feeling.
  • If you feel you have to force it. Try a smaller plug or more lube another day.

Frequently asked questions

What size butt plug should a beginner start with?

A small one, under about 32 mm at the widest point and under about 10 cm long, with a tapered tip and a flared base.

How do I measure a butt plug?

Look for the widest point of the bulb, usually given as width or diameter in mm or cm. That number matters more than the length.

How long can I wear a butt plug?

Start with 5 to 15 minutes and build up slowly. Do not wear one for hours, and take it out if anything hurts.

Can I use a numbing cream with a plug?

No. Pain tells you to slow down or stop, and numbing products hide it.

Which lube is best for a butt plug?

A thick water-based lube works with every material. Silicone lube suits glass plugs but can damage silicone ones.
