Do Sex Toys Loosen the Vagina? The Facts

Updated

Short answer: no. Sex toys, like sex itself, do not permanently stretch or loosen the vagina. The vagina is muscular and elastic: it relaxes and widens with arousal, then returns to its usual shape afterwards. Feeling tighter or looser at different times is normal and usually comes down to arousal, comfort and muscle tension.

Every body is different, and there is no “right” size or feel. This page explains what actually happens, in plain language, so you can make choices without worry. It is part of our myths and facts series.

Where the myth comes from

The idea that a vagina gets “loose” with use has more to do with old ideas about women’s bodies than with biology. It shows up in jokes, in judgements about women’s past relationships and in myths about virginity. It is used to make people feel ashamed, and it has no medical basis. Toys get pulled into the same story simply because they are new and talked about less.

What is actually true

The ISSM states that having sex does not change the size of the vagina or have a lasting effect on its tension. With arousal, the pelvic floor muscles around it relax so it can open; afterwards the muscles return to their usual position and shape (ISSM on vaginal size). The same is true for a toy.

The ISSM adds that nerves can make the muscles tense, which can make penetration feel tight, and that positions change how things feel. Over many years, age or childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles for some people, which has nothing to do with toys.

If that is a concern, a health professional can advise on pelvic floor exercises, which the NHS explains step by step (NHS on pelvic floor exercises).

What to do instead

  • Take your time. Arousal is what lets the body relax and open comfortably.
  • Use lube, especially with toys; it makes everything more comfortable.
  • Choose a size that feels good, not one you think you “should” manage.
  • Stop if it hurts. Discomfort is a signal to slow down, add lube or try another day.
  • Learn about your pelvic floor if you are curious; it is about comfort and control, not “tightness”.

See a doctor if…

  • penetration is often painful, or pain continues afterwards
  • you notice bleeding that is not your period
  • you feel heaviness or a bulge in the vagina
  • you leak urine when you cough, laugh or exercise and it bothers you
