Splashproof: Meaning, Uses and What to Buy

Splashproof, often listed as IPX4 to IPX6, means a toy can handle splashes, a rinse under the tap or use in the shower, but should not be put fully underwater. Water can get in through the buttons or the charging port if it is submerged. For use in the bath you need a toy rated IPX7 or higher.

Why it matters when buying

Many budget toys are splashproof rather than fully waterproof. That is fine for most people, as long as you clean the toy with a damp cloth or a quick rinse and keep it out of the bath.

What to look for

  • The IP number on the product page (IPX4, IPX5 or IPX6)
  • A quick rinse with the charging port facing up
  • Dry it fully before charging

Products that use this

Two toys rated IPX6 by their makers: fine in the shower, not in the bath. More in Vibrators and massagers.
