IPX7 waterproof rating: Meaning and What to Buy

IPX7 is a water-resistance rating from the international IP code. A toy rated IPX7 can be fully submerged in water up to 1 metre deep for 30 minutes, so it is safe in the bath or shower and can be washed under the tap. IPX5 and IPX6 mean resistant to splashes and jets only, not underwater use.

Why it matters when buying

“Waterproof” on a listing can mean anything from splash-safe to fully submersible. The IP number tells you what you can actually do: rinse it, take it in the shower or use it in the bath. A waterproof toy is also easier to clean properly.

What to look for

  • IPX7 if you want to use it in the bath
  • IPX5 or IPX6 is enough for rinsing and the shower
  • A sealed port or magnetic charging
  • Remotes are often not waterproof even when the toy is
