Porous vs non-porous: Meaning and What to Buy

Porous vs non-porous describes whether a toy material has microscopic holes. Porous materials such as TPE, jelly, rubber and PVC can trap moisture and bacteria even after washing. Non-porous materials such as silicone, glass, steel and ABS have a sealed surface that can be cleaned completely, so they are better for sharing and last longer.

Why it matters when buying

This one property decides how you clean, store and share a toy. A porous toy should stay with one person, or be used with a condom if shared, and be replaced more often. A non-porous toy can be washed with soap and water and kept for years.

What to look for

  • Non-porous for anything you will share with a partner
  • A condom over porous toys if they are shared
  • Thorough drying after washing, especially for porous toys
