ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a hard, smooth plastic used for the bodies, handles and buttons of many vibrators and bullets. It is non-porous, body-safe, light and easy to clean. It has no give at all, so makers often combine it with an outer layer of silicone where the toy touches the body.
Why it matters when buying
When a listing says “silicone and ABS”, the ABS is usually the rigid core or handle and the silicone is the part that touches you. Hard ABS carries vibration well and keeps prices down, but it feels firmer and cooler than all-silicone toys.
What to look for
- Smooth seams with no sharp edges
- Silicone over the parts that touch skin, if you want softness
- Any lube with a pure ABS toy; water-based if it has silicone parts
