Glycerin-free describes a lubricant made without glycerin, a sweet-tasting thickener found in many water-based and flavoured lubes. Some people with sensitive skin prefer glycerin-free lube, especially for internal use. Glycerin-free lubes usually get their texture from cellulose, aloe or plant gums instead, and often feel lighter.
Why it matters when buying
The ingredient list tells you more than the brand. Flavoured and warming lubes usually contain glycerin, while many organic lubes and intimate moisturisers do not. If a lube has ever left you itchy or uncomfortable, glycerin-free is worth trying.
What to look for
- No glycerin in the ingredient list
- Free of parabens and fragrance, if you are sensitive
- Water-based, so it is safe with every toy
