TPE and TPR: Meaning, Uses and What to Buy

TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) and TPR (thermoplastic rubber) are soft, stretchy materials used in many strokers, sleeves and lower-priced toys. They feel closer to skin than silicone and cost less. Both are phthalate-free when made well, but they are slightly porous, so they need careful cleaning and drying and wear out sooner.

Why it matters when buying

Most male masturbators and many budget toys are TPE, which is fine if you look after them. Because the material is slightly porous, a TPE toy is best kept for one person, washed after each use and dried fully before storing.

What to look for

  • “Phthalate-free” on the listing
  • A water-based lube; oils and silicone lube can damage TPE
  • Dry it fully before storage; a dusting of cornflour keeps it soft
  • Replace it when the colour, smell or texture changes
